The Trauma Informed Clinician is an evidence-based outline of trauma and the developing brain. It details how trauma relates to language, cognition and behavior and how to effectively work with children and adults who have experienced trauma.
PRESENTER: Amanda Schaumburg, MS, CCC-SLP
Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for speech therapy students
contain many elements that speech-language pathologists (SLPs)
must understand and be able to communicate to an IEP team
effectively. Many graduate programs do not specifically teach these
skills and many clinical supervisors are too busy to successfully
prepare graduate interns for their positions as case managers of
student files. SLPs should be not only proficient in writing IEPs, but
also able to present them to a team of parents and staff members
with confidence. This course outlines the basics and offers best
practice examples of each area of the IEP.
PRESENTER: Katrina Martin, PhD
In this course we will discuss considerations for social-emotional learning (SEL) for autistic children and the dangers inherent in promoting “social skills”. We will compare and contrast conventional SEL education and goals with a neurodiversity-affirming program that supports autistic learners to be their authentic selves. Participants will leave with a better understanding of how to evaluate social-emotional goals, lessons and curricula to best support their students.

According to the most recent demographic profile of ASHA constituents, a mere 8% of practicing speech-language pathologists (SLPs) indicated that they identify as a person of color. The result of this demographic phenomenon is that there are often cultural disconnects and profound communication breakdowns between therapists and the students, clients, and patients they serve, as well as families and caregivers. This course will discuss how the lack of diversity in the field of speech therapy can result in a fractured patient-provider relationship and inequitable treatment. Attendees will learn about the impact of implicit bias, actionable steps to diversify the SLP field, and various culturally and linguistically sustaining SLP practices for the assessment and intervention of diverse clients/families/patients. Additionally, participants will be provided with an overview of dynamic assessment, multicultural considerations for school-based SLP services, and strengths/weaknesses of current assessment practices.
PRESENTER: Nicole Kolenda, MS, CCC-SLP, PC
