Every person who goes into a therapeutic or teaching profession has the same calling. Help others thrive, be a force of good, support others in overcoming obstacles and becoming the best version of themselves. Yet, at times partnering with members of other disciplines can feel like a stagnant negotiation. Whose goals should be prioritized? Where should resources and efforts should be placed? When we are talking about Autistic children these discussions can get heated as all parties seek to help the child in the way they think is most important. It’s time to step back and re-evaluate our goals for Autistic youth. Join me to learn more about the Neurodiversity paradigm and how you can use it to align your thinking across team members to find success in meeting the true needs of your Autistic students. *Note: I use identity-first language as that is the preference of the community that I serve.
PRESENTERS: Danielle Reed, MS, CCC-SLP
Soft skills are the skills you possess that go beyond the training and knowledge developed during your career. These skills focus on social, leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. Soft skills relate to working with others or on your own, and they are integral to successful collaboration. This course focuses on soft skills, why they are important, and practical ways to improve them. Team members who improve soft skills can experience more successful collaborative efforts that benefit their students and clients.
Join us for a conversation about the various roles of educational professionals in supporting every student in an inclusive neighborhood. Related service providers (SLP, OT, PT, and more…) have a pivotal role in the successful implementation of true inclusion of learners with disabilities in the regular education setting. Teachers may not be aware or recognize this role, or that they can collaborate meaningfully with special educators and related service providers. While this might seem overwhelming, intentionally leveraging the principles of universal design for learning (UDL), is a powerful vehicle to break down barriers to meaningful collaboration between all educational stakeholders. Participants will learn the who, what, why, when, where, how to utilize/collaborate with the people in their inclusive neighborhood.
PRESENTERS: Lori Madrid and Lisa Fluckiger, M.Ed
Parents are often the key to achieving a student’s IEP goals. In this discussion, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker interviews a parent who successfully navigated the IEP journey to provide therapists with specific ideas they can start using immediately to strengthen communication with the parent on an IEP team. Therapists will learn how to access and improve a parent’s knowledge, skill, and experience to maximize success with therapy goals. This is intended to enhance Therapists’ overall effectiveness regarding interpersonal communication with the parent, which will ultimately benefit the child.
